To Muskoka and Beyond….

It’s been awhile, I know, slap on the wrist!
I’m back after a beautiful, but quick weekend away in Muskoka. For those of you who don’t know, Muskoka is a district about 2 hours north of Toronto full of lovely small towns and it’s considered mainly cottage country to us city folk. Life up north is different, and a much quieter pace, so it’s the perfect place to get away from the city for a weekend, and best of all, for me, it means spending time with close friends who spend their Summers there.
Steven and I hit the road early Saturday morning, beating the sure to be terrible traffic, by an hour or two, and arriving in Huntsville by around 10am. It was the perfect day, full of bright sunshine, somewhat overwhelming heat but also a big street fair running right down the main street. They had rolled out grass to cover the pavement and kids played with giant Jenga, bouncy balls and hula hoops up and down in their bare feet. There was music and the entire town was alive, just how I remembered it from being there last time, at least 9 or so years ago.

I took Steven up and down the high street, and we poked our heads in to all the shops that sell a million versions of Muskoka branded clothing and strange little antiques. We picked up a couple of neat vintage things that we don’t have space for at home but wanted to have anyways.
At the bottom of the main street is a pub with tables on the main docks, so we had a drink and some lunch there before deciding to move on to another little town called Bracebridge.
Bracebridge is smaller than Hunstville but also a bit cuter, with a little waterfall and a historic walk that takes you around the falls and into a bit of forest.

Despite the afternoon heat becoming a bit much, we did the little walk and followed it up with Nanaimo bar ice cream cones. I was feeling increasingly more Canadian as the day went on, as Muskoka really brings out my Canadian pride – it just feels like home no matter what town we stop in.

To add to the already friendly home town charm, we heard The Tragically Hip playing in so many shops and people everywhere asked if we were planning on watching the final show on Saturday night. It really made me happy to see the support and love that they are getting everywhere.
We were going to be visiting friends at a cottage, but had received a night at the Pine Lodge Inn in Port Sydney, not far from where our friends were staying, so we stopped by our lovely room to have a rest before heading over to dinner.
Pine Lodge is just a quick walk from the main swimming dock on Mary Lake and about 15 minutes walk from the general store, Uncle Larry’s, in Port Sydney. It’s an older lodge with modern rooms so ended being a great place to stay and we felt totally spoiled.
Our evening was filled with sharing a barbequed meal, with wine and cake to celebrate a friend’s birthday, her daughter’s imminent departure to university and Steve and I’s upcoming wedding. Best of all, we laughed and had a wonderful evening in the best company.

To top it all off, we watched the Hip’s last show and it was emotional like I expected but even more touching was hearing it around the lake when you stepped outside. I think most people in neighbouring cottages were tuned in as well, to spend one last night with Gord Downie. I think I will write a separate post about The Tragically Hip because I know that so many of you are reading this and have no connection to them since they aren’t known all around the world – they are a genuine Canadian treasure.

In true Muskoka fashion, it thunder stormed all through the night on Saturday and we woke up to no power on Sunday morning. We set out to still have a big hot breakfast, making eggs, bacon and toasted bagels on the barbeque, although I have to confess that we cheated slightly when we took the glass coffee pot down to the general store to fill it with hot coffee. To be fair, one can only do so much with a barbeque before they have had coffee.
We spent the remainder of Sunday sitting on the porch in the random moments of sun and shade, and we bravely went for a swim in the lake, despite it being windy and a bit chilly. Being in the lake is so therapeutic mainly because you can float along without worrying about salt water getting in your eyes, which in my opinion makes it more fun than being in the ocean-  but maybe I’m biased, having not grown up close to the ocean.

As per tradition, at least in my family, we made a pit stop at Webers burgers in Gravenhurst before sitting in traffic with the million other people who decided that driving home Sunday night was a good idea too – but hey! What can ya do?! EH?!

I have to say that after being away from cottage country for so long, I didn’t realize just how much I missed it and how much it’s a part of who I am. I’m so excited that we are spending more time up there after the wedding in September – I can hardly wait.

Life Update – Canada!

Hi everyone!
So it’s been a while but I have so much to tell you about! Since moving to Canada in early December, I feel like my life has been turned around and upside down. It’s funny how nearly 6 years away makes you forget how some of the simplest things work. I had completely forgotten how little daily things are different in Canada, compared to France and the UK, like how I can’t shop online with my debit card, or withdraw money from any ATM I want without being penalized, or use contactless payment everywhere. On the plus side, it’s much easier to j-walk, as people seem less inclined to run you down here than in London, and there is definitely more sun, even though it’s chillier.
Anyways, I didn’t stop by to give you a list of random and odd difference of two of my favourite cities, but instead to tell you about what’s going on.
Winter is finally clearing off and it’s starting to feel more like Spring everyday. I can happily deal with the cold if it means there are blue skies and sun – that warm sun on my back is something I missed when away. I have been working from home since January, which has been nice and allowed me to find a place for Steven and I to live.
We found a Tardis in Toronto… who knew?!
We are moving to one of our favourite areas in Toronto, called Little Italy.  It feels like a little town in the middle of the city, full of great restaurants and little independent shops, but still very close to necessities and transit. Our new place has room for our little kitty, Bettie, who travelled all the way from the UK with us and is currently staying with my brother until we move next week. We can’t wait to have her back.
In terms of blogging, I have felt a bit disconnected, as I rediscover the blogosphere for plus size fashion in Toronto. I am so glad that Nicolette Mason had her collection launch at Additionelle and Tess Holliday at Penningtons recently as it was great to see some familiar faces and meet lots of lovely new people that I have followed for a long time.
I promise that regular blogs are coming, but first, I need to get moved into our new place, where I can finally unpack all my belongings and see whats in my closet. Stay tuned for a couple of interior design posts while I plan for our adorable apartment – I love decorating!
I am really loving being able to see my family and friends who I have missed so much over the years and it feels good to be close by but it’s also hard as I miss so many lovely people in the UK too. Although it’s hard some days, I remind myself how lucky we are to have a home in two places and people that love us in both.
Thanks for stopping by and see you soon!

Happy New Year And All That Good Stuff

Hello everyone and happy New Year!
Apologies first off for the silence over the month of January, but I promise I have a good excuse. I spent the best part of January in Canada with my fiance, Steven, visiting family and friends and showing him around Toronto. With all the excitement of being tourists and seeing everyone, I was completely wrapped up and busy and didn’t spend much time near my computer. But, I am back in London now and have so much to share with you – so expect a busy February on here.
Before anything else – I have a few fun photos to share from our trip – it was cold, snowy and just so magical!

Here is our couple selfie 🙂

We tried to cram in as much touristy stuff as possible, which included a trip to the frozen Niagara Falls – which I have never seen in winter. It was pretty neat to see the mist almost frozen mid air but the falls still pouring over with such a force.
After the falls we went to Buffalo and enjoyed girly pink martini’s with our dinner.
While I was home, I also chopped off the awful mullet I was unintentionally growing. I look forward to getting to see my lovely stylist Laurie at Mad Factory Salon in Toronto because she always knows what to do with my mop.
Near the end of our trip, we were lucky enough to be invited to stay at a friends cottage up north of Toronto.  This is not far from the area that we are considering for our wedding, although it will be less snowy when we get married I hope. It became quite the adventure, when the weather took over and our car broke down, but we managed to have a fantastic time in the snow.

It was such a great trip, although it went way too quick, and it was so nice to see all my family and friends back home.
Have you been to Canada and jumped in this much snow!? Tell me about it!

Snazzy Footwear On A January Afternoon

Hello again!

So back in January when I was home in lovely Toronto, I did a little photo shoot with my best friend Sarah to feature our newly purchased shoes. We each on different occasions bought pairs of killer heels that I thought why not do a post about it?

It turns out that Sarah also had a new outfit, for an upcoming wedding, to go with said new shoes, and so our little afternoon shoot was all set.

I brought back an old favourite piece because I have never featured it on my blog and I am secretly hoping that the fashion gods are listening and that they will invite Beth Ditto back for another collection/collaboration.

I’m wearing my favourite Beth Ditto lightning bolt sweater from the Beth Ditto  for Evans collection over a year ago, with a pair of cheap chic leggings from Primark. I snagged my blingtastic heels at Pretty Things Boutique in Halifax, Nova Scotia and they are very high but I can’t resist them. I love the way they look and they make my calves look like I just ran a marathon.

Sarah is wearing an amazing fuchsia dress from Canada’s new British favourite, Top Shop along with a black lace cardi/bolero from H&M.

Her snazzy and oh so soft fuchsia wedges are from Town Shoes, in Toronto and have the cutest tassels hanging off the zipper in the back. I’m not sure how she managed to find heels this amazing that match her dress like they were made from the same cut of fabric, but that’s her amazing luck for you.

We did Sarah’s makeup to match! Doesn’t she look glamorous?

I know the photos are a couple of months old, and that my hair is completely different but I have been prepping this post forever and absolutely couldn’t not share the pictures with you because they are so fun. Long live killer heels, sore calves and fabulous looking legs!!!

Hometown Showcase: Stefanie Bezaire

I am so excited to have come across Stefanie Bezaire, an amazing up and coming designer for plus sizes! She is from Windsor, Ontario, which isn’t too far from Toronto (my hometown!), hooray for Canadian designers and supporting local!

Unfortunately, I was still in France during the One of a Kind Craft Show in Toronto, but I sent my mum to investigate the Stefanie Bezaire booth for me. Thank goodness I have a mother who will do these things for me! 🙂 I am completely in love with every piece, the fabrics look gorgeous and the outfits are ultra stylish. Her online shop went up today, and you can read her blog as well!

You can find all things Stefanie Bezaire at http://www.stefaniebezaire.com and on facebook .

I bought a Suitcase… but i will tell you about it later.

Oh how fast life is currently moving! I can’t believe it, but all of my classes have ended! First Dj-ing, then latin dance and now African dance! I only have hoola hooping left, thank goodness! So, as a way to fill my time, I have a few new things up my sleeve to keep me busy. I have yet to mention that during all the time that I have been galavanting around the city and working, I have also been doing two full year university French courses. They are taking up a bit of my time, and are more challenging than I originally anticipated, but I need them to apply to Teacher’s college in a couple of years. I have done several online courses during my academic career and have found that Athabasca University is by far the best place to take online courses.  They have the best and most well organized system for delivering material without actually forcing you to go to class.  I have taken an English course on children’s literature, an introduction to women’s studies and now the  two french courses. I have also taken similar style courses through Acadia university that do not compare. I felt this was appropriate to mention in case anyone was interested in taking a course or degree online. Often if you are already in a university program, they will let you take up to 50% of your degree at another institution and Athabasca is a major qualifier, so it can be helpful to anyone who is or is thinking about becoming a student.
In other exciting news, I joined the YMCA! I have decided to become more fitness oriented. In the past I have really dislike the gym, but have decided that if I do this right, I will find a way to like it. I am going to do Aquafit, and a bunch of other classes. This week is tricky because my work schedule is earlier rather than later, but next we I start my regular 9:30 to 5:30 shift, thereby making going to the gym much easier. The times of the classes are very odd but will definitely work. I will let you know all about it when I go for my first workout tomorrow.
The Y is at Spring Garden and South Park Street just up from the Lord Nelson Hotel. If you or someone you know is a member come join me for a work out, I would love a friend to go with!
Stay tuned for other exciting things that you can join and do in this fine city! I’m still working it all out for the next couple of weeks.
And now an update of fun things to do this week!
Wednesday night at the Company House, there is an open mic night where my dear friend Adam will be playing. Remember his name, Adam Sterling, he is both an exceptional guitar player, lyricist and singer. Check out his website by clicking the word AWESOME.
Also, next week at the Paragon on Gottingen, Glen Matlock, yes the former Sex Pistol, is playing an acoustic set. This should be very cool, I am currently trying to get tickets, so perhaps I shall see you all there.
Until next time, stay busy Haligonians!

Things to keep yourself busy with this week…

Hola!

So I only have a minute here so I am going to post a couple of exciting things to check out this week in the big wide city of Halifax. Tomorrow evening at the North Street Church, the Ghost Bees are playing with Cousins and Fresh Flesh.  I have yet to see Cousins or Fresh Flesh, but I do know that the Ghost Bees are phenomenal.

Also from Wednesday to Sunday, KTS (King’s Theatre Society) is putting on the show Harvey, so be sure to check that out. If you are on Facebook, you can check it out here.

On Sunday there is the FemFest craft fair at the North Street church. It begins at 10 and should be full of great things to see and buy!  There are also plenty of things to check out  at The Company House on Gottingen street.

Also, if you are a Facebook user please check out The Aninga Project, which is a non-profit initiative that is in the process of being formed to put the focus on sending girls to school in Africa. If you are interested in being involved please pop a message onto the wall, or join the group and check back as things develop!

If I hear of anything else going on, or if you hear of anything let me know in the comments!

Cheers!
