To Muskoka and Beyond….

It’s been awhile, I know, slap on the wrist!
I’m back after a beautiful, but quick weekend away in Muskoka. For those of you who don’t know, Muskoka is a district about 2 hours north of Toronto full of lovely small towns and it’s considered mainly cottage country to us city folk. Life up north is different, and a much quieter pace, so it’s the perfect place to get away from the city for a weekend, and best of all, for me, it means spending time with close friends who spend their Summers there.
Steven and I hit the road early Saturday morning, beating the sure to be terrible traffic, by an hour or two, and arriving in Huntsville by around 10am. It was the perfect day, full of bright sunshine, somewhat overwhelming heat but also a big street fair running right down the main street. They had rolled out grass to cover the pavement and kids played with giant Jenga, bouncy balls and hula hoops up and down in their bare feet. There was music and the entire town was alive, just how I remembered it from being there last time, at least 9 or so years ago.

I took Steven up and down the high street, and we poked our heads in to all the shops that sell a million versions of Muskoka branded clothing and strange little antiques. We picked up a couple of neat vintage things that we don’t have space for at home but wanted to have anyways.
At the bottom of the main street is a pub with tables on the main docks, so we had a drink and some lunch there before deciding to move on to another little town called Bracebridge.
Bracebridge is smaller than Hunstville but also a bit cuter, with a little waterfall and a historic walk that takes you around the falls and into a bit of forest.

Despite the afternoon heat becoming a bit much, we did the little walk and followed it up with Nanaimo bar ice cream cones. I was feeling increasingly more Canadian as the day went on, as Muskoka really brings out my Canadian pride – it just feels like home no matter what town we stop in.

To add to the already friendly home town charm, we heard The Tragically Hip playing in so many shops and people everywhere asked if we were planning on watching the final show on Saturday night. It really made me happy to see the support and love that they are getting everywhere.
We were going to be visiting friends at a cottage, but had received a night at the Pine Lodge Inn in Port Sydney, not far from where our friends were staying, so we stopped by our lovely room to have a rest before heading over to dinner.
Pine Lodge is just a quick walk from the main swimming dock on Mary Lake and about 15 minutes walk from the general store, Uncle Larry’s, in Port Sydney. It’s an older lodge with modern rooms so ended being a great place to stay and we felt totally spoiled.
Our evening was filled with sharing a barbequed meal, with wine and cake to celebrate a friend’s birthday, her daughter’s imminent departure to university and Steve and I’s upcoming wedding. Best of all, we laughed and had a wonderful evening in the best company.

To top it all off, we watched the Hip’s last show and it was emotional like I expected but even more touching was hearing it around the lake when you stepped outside. I think most people in neighbouring cottages were tuned in as well, to spend one last night with Gord Downie. I think I will write a separate post about The Tragically Hip because I know that so many of you are reading this and have no connection to them since they aren’t known all around the world – they are a genuine Canadian treasure.

In true Muskoka fashion, it thunder stormed all through the night on Saturday and we woke up to no power on Sunday morning. We set out to still have a big hot breakfast, making eggs, bacon and toasted bagels on the barbeque, although I have to confess that we cheated slightly when we took the glass coffee pot down to the general store to fill it with hot coffee. To be fair, one can only do so much with a barbeque before they have had coffee.
We spent the remainder of Sunday sitting on the porch in the random moments of sun and shade, and we bravely went for a swim in the lake, despite it being windy and a bit chilly. Being in the lake is so therapeutic mainly because you can float along without worrying about salt water getting in your eyes, which in my opinion makes it more fun than being in the ocean-  but maybe I’m biased, having not grown up close to the ocean.

As per tradition, at least in my family, we made a pit stop at Webers burgers in Gravenhurst before sitting in traffic with the million other people who decided that driving home Sunday night was a good idea too – but hey! What can ya do?! EH?!

I have to say that after being away from cottage country for so long, I didn’t realize just how much I missed it and how much it’s a part of who I am. I’m so excited that we are spending more time up there after the wedding in September – I can hardly wait.

Bournemouth Bound for the Weekend!

Hello!
So a couple of weeks ago, my gorgeous blogger bestie, Hollie (from Pretty Big Butterflies, of course) and I took a drive to Bournemouth for a fun filled weekend of shopping, outfit post taking and a special shoot with BGP Magazine! We both got off work as early as possible on the Friday and Hollie drove us to Bournemouth in her fancy new-ish car. I love a good a good road trip and one filled with laughter and gossip is even better – we didn’t even have the radio on – that’s how much fun we were having.
We arrived late in the evening to our hotel, the Travelodge Bournemouth Seafront and ordered pizza to munch on while we watched the Celebrity Stand Up to Cancer episode of Gogglebox which was both hilarious and so sad all at once.
We woke up super early on Saturday so that we could go to the seafront and take outfit photos – it was beautiful but very foggy so our photos have lots of misty ambiance – that’s the look we were going for.
We ate a quick breaky in the hotel, did our pictures and then headed to Poole, the town next door, so that I could finally visit the very first Lush shop – something that has been on my list of things to do in the UK for a very long time, and given my imminent departure, a very well timed activity!
The shop was so charming and welcoming and as always the staff were wonderful. I snagged a box designed by Vivienne Westwood of Showder – Lush’s shower powder – its so lovely and exfoliates your skin – it also goes from blue to purple once it gets wet – I love it!
Next, we had coffee at a cute hipster-esque spot on the high street and walked to the sea front to check out the harbour. The day was lovely, a bit humid but the weather was still nice.
We walked into town further and had a good shop in New Look and Primark before heading home to relax before dinner.
We went out to a local spot for dinner where we were pleasantly surprised at how nice our food was and spent the meal chit chatting about our day and how excited we were to see the BGP girls the next day for our shoot.
We headed back to the hotel to watch QVC and giggle about all the silly things they have for sale and how wonderful the presenters are at playing “interested”.
Our shoot was at 10am on Sunday, so we got up early, showered and dressed and headed down for breakfast in the hotel, it was really nice not having to sort out a spot for breakfast with the busy morning that we had ahead of us.
Our shoot went really well and we can’t wait to see the shots so stay tuned for those!
Hollie and I had so much fun and it really was a great weekend away! I am going to miss her so much when I go, so these fun weekends away are a nice way to make loads of memories to last us while we are apart once I go to Canada…. but then of course she will have to come visit me! 🙂

The Lawn for a #PicnicAtTheTower

Hello everyone!
So today is a slightly different post as I want to tell you all about this lovely picnic that I attended on The Lawn at The Tower Hotel a couple of weeks ago. A big group of bloggers were invited to have an evening tea on The Lawn, which is a literal green space in front of the Tower Hotel that borders the Thames and looks on to Tower Bridge. It has a spectacular view and a lovely ambiance, with groovy music playing and fun “yard sized” games to play.
It really was beautiful to watch the sun set – look at that sky!
Hollie from PrettyBigButterflies and I went together and after one (or two) cheeky glasses of deliciously fruity Pimms, we headed straight for the mega Jenga where we played a heated game that went on for much longer than everyone expected.
Once we finally settled down, we enjoyed the view whilst testing out all the goodies in our picnic box. We had a selection of small sandwiches, fruit, Innocent juice and of course dessert! They had options for vegetarians and other types of foodies too!
The Lawn would be an amazing place to have a party after work or take friends who are visiting London or even to celebrate your birthday! It’s in the heart of London and has some amazing views – not to mention you can sit and watch the sun go down whilst enjoying the outdoor bar and passing people.
Check out this lush lawn against my orange shoes!
Here Hollie and I are enjoying our delicious cocktails all in blue – we don’t coordinate on purpose – it just happens.
The Tower hotel is part of the Guoman hotel group and is really a one of a kind spot to stay in London as there aren’t many hotels around the same area and certainly none that can offer the views and proximity to sights like Tower Bridge and the Tower of London too!
I had so much fun at the picnic and will definitely be heading back to the Lawn again soon!

My Travel Philosophy – Five Things To Take With You

After doing quite a bit of travelling recently, I wanted to share some of my thoughts with you about being a fat travelling girl.

So here’s the thing, I truly believe that everyone should be able to do what they like with their life regardless of their size – it is not up to someone else and their insecurities to stop you from accomplishing a goal or realizing a dream. I say this because I see posts on social media everyday where fat people express their major anxieties and down right refusals to travel (among other things) because of their fear of what others will say, do, how they will react etc.

I completely understand this and those worries – I have been there and can sympathize, but I’m happy to report that I am also at a place where it is a lot less of a concern. Since January, I have visited six new countries and flown countless times, and have had no comments or mention about my weight in a negative way. I’ve been grateful to have pool side conversations with other women about embracing your size, body and everything in between and to bring up just how few people genuinely are looking at you or care about your size or insecurities.
On my holiday last month to Turkey, I had a good ponder and decided that I would share my thoughts on how to stay positive while travelling fat.

1.     Embrace your size – you will be the size that you are regardless or whether you shrug, sulk and cower within yourself so you might as well stand tall and take charge. If you do get a comment or a remark, acknowledge it, let them know it’s unnecessary and rude and move on. Negative energy and attitude belongs to those that dish it out and you do not have to accept it.

2.     Wear clothing that makes you feel good – There is nothing brave about wearing a bikini on a beach or by the pool, just as it’s not shameful to choose a one piece, we all have different comfort levels and we should, while remembering to push the right boundaries, remain comfortable. If going to the beach or pool for a swim is already a massive step on your road to confidence, then wear something that makes you feel good, not what you think is brave. Bravery is not the objective but the act of swimming itself is.

3.     Accept challenges and live your life outside the box – I see so many people saying they can’t or won’t travel because of low self-esteem or even due to not having someone to travel with. Imagine what you could accomplish on your own, the places you could see, and better yet the people you could meet. The very trip you are frightened of taking could sort out so many of life’s woes, simply by going solo.

4.     Travel somewhere that you truly want to go. Every trip should have a purpose, even if that purpose is simply to relax. Plan a trip to Italy if you want history and food, a trip to a warm beach spot for relaxation (if that’s your thing) or head to a local spa for the weekend and simply treat yourself.  If you are afraid to travel, try building up to it – start small and work up to something special. Putting a focus on where you want to go and planning will help you realize it. If you are somewhere that fascinates and excites you, you will be so busy thinking about what you are seeing that those body negative demons won’t have time to creep in like they sometimes do at home.

5.     Smile, and laugh whenever possible – confidence comes from within and even if you aren’t feeling it everyday, making an effort to look happy will attract happy, and therefor will come back to make you feel the same. If you travel, smile everywhere you go, it’s infectious, people will see and feel this beam of good and it will open you up to positive interactions.

The point I am trying to make is that I wish everyone to find ways to feel as liberated as I do when I travel. Don’t ever let the opinions of other people or your own negative thoughts stop you from going somewhere!

#FrenchCurves – Birthday Bikini Surprise!

Hooray,  and happy 2nd birthday to the French Curves challenge!
To celebrate this exciting month, we, the French Curvettes have done two posts!
The theme for the second challenge is Bikini Surprise and I am so happy that I took lots of photos of my bikinis on my holiday in Turkey.
This is my favourite set of photos and they were taken at a water park just outside the town of Fethiye.

There are my favourite bikini photos and they were taken at a water park just outside of Fethiye.
I rode the waterslides with Steven, my fiance, all day and swam in the pool and it felt great!
Ces photos ont été pris a un water park juste à l’extérieur de la ville de Fethiye.
J’ai montais les toboggans avec Steven, mon fiancé, toute la journée et on a nagé dans la piscine et c’était formidable.

This bikini is from Forever21 and it is almost perfection. I love the colours and the pattern, and the fit is great too. I wish it had better support in the bust, but sometimes you can’t have everything.
I am so excited to see what everyone else’s posts look like and too see all the beautiful curvette’s in bikinis!

Congratulations to our beautiful and amazing challenge creator, Gaelle from The Curvy and Curly Closet, you are an inspiration!
And thank you to all the wonderful participants in the challenge for sharing, reading and letting me a part of your wonderful community!
Here’s to another great year!

City Break with Taking Shape

Hello!
So as you can see, regular programming is starting to take place over here again. My holiday in Turkey, allowed for some much needed rest and relaxation and I am feeling ready to take on the world again.
Today, I want to share an OOTD with you that I took a couple of weekends ago while I had a short break with friends in Amsterdam. I’ve been wanting to share this Taking shape tunic/legging/cardi outfit for a while, as it’s now a staple in my closet but just haven’t had the chance.
I saw this tunic/top in Taking Shape and immediately went for it – I love the colours and that it has pockets – you can never pass up a top with pockets.

There is a cute stitching detail along the top and it’s a sleeveless tunic, which you can’t see thanks to the gorgeous black waterfall card that I have over it. This was perfect for the still Spring weather in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago.

Taking Shape also do leggings with control top which I love, because I find that they tend to slide down a lot less. I  do find their leggings a bit long, but nothing rolling the cuff can’t fix! I wish we had stayed in Amsterdam longer, because it really is such a beautiful city – if you haven’t been, add it to your list -it is awesome!

#TuscanyNominate – My 2Plus2 For Life!

Hello everyone!
So today, I am writing something a little different, it’s an entry for a competition called #TuscanyNominate, to win a weekend in Tuscany run by TuscanyNow with one special person. I am nominating my blogger bestie Hollie from Pretty Big Butterflies to be that person.
It’s funny how people walk into you life unexpectedly and at first it’s as though there is nothing and then all of a sudden it’s like they have always been there – this is how it’s been with Hollie since we met just over a year ago. We first met at an event and didn’t click, but the second time around we became fast friends and have never looked back!

Hollie is my partner in crime, and blogging babe sister. I love too many things about her to write them all here, but the fact that we can be at home in the evening doing whatever and still chatting via voice notes through Whatapp about absolutely nothing is amazing, and that she always checks in with me when I am down, and the way that she never forgets an important event or day and that her smile and laugh are infectious. I love her hunger to learn and explore and can’t wait to see all the big places she goes!
I am nominating Hollie as my Tuscany Getaway nomination because she is the best!
With my ever changing life, and plans to return to Canada in the somewhat near future, saying goodbye to Hollie is going to be impossible – so one last hoora and time spent away would be amazing. It would be a time to chat, prance about in our knickers, eat good food, laugh and really create memories to help make the time apart easier.
Hollie works so hard and gives to everyone even when they continue to take – she goes out of her way to make sure people are happy, and deserves something special like this trip.
I don’t know what I would do without her and can’t tell her enough how much I love her!
She has made me try so many new things, be more active in so many ways and to step out of my comfort zone all the time – which is amazing!  I love that we swap closets, try on all the same things when we shop and know what to say to each other always.
I am never shy to say what I think around her and know that I will always get the same from her.
It’s really special in life when you find someone like Hollie and she is my friend for life, without a doubt – I know we will find ways to visit each other once I leave the UK  but this trip to Tuscany would be the ultimate friendship gift – something we could talk about forever and enjoy so much.
So Hollie B will you go with ME to TUSCANY?!?!?!

2Plus2 – On Location With State of Mind

Good morning lovelies!
So today I have a super exciting post that I have been waiting to share with you all for so long.
Back in March, Hollie of Pretty Big Butterflies and I were invited by the active wear brand State of Mind to be part of a photo shoot out in Devon at South Sands.
I have worn State of Mind for a couple of years now and have always loved their clothing – they are well made with gorgeous soft fabric and are made to last.
If you don’t know the brand, pop over to their website and have a look at what they have. It’s plus size active wear that is created for bigger bodies but is also great for wearing out and about.
Like I said, the pieces are cut with big bodies in mind, so the trousers don’t slip down and the shirts are long enough, to name only two of the many well thought out tricks that make their active wear great.
Hollie and I were really excited to work with a brand that was making clothing with our body types in mind and to be invited to be part of a photoshoot in a place like South Sands was an absolute treat.

We spent two wonderful days at South Sands, frolicking in State of Mind clothing and it was great! We did a photo shoot on the beach and in a studio as well as more candid bits and bobs that I will share later in the post with the help of Gavin Withey. It was great to do something new and it felt wonderful to be in an environment where being plus size and active was positive -it’s not a feeling we are often allowed to feel as I’m sure many will attest to.

The professional images that we received from the shoot on the second day in studio are awesome and  I think they really capture what the brand is about and also how much fun Hollie and I had. I loved hula hooping and testing out the boxing gloves and Hollie looks amazing in her field hockey gear. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate how gorgeous Hollie looks in the beach shot below?

It was an amazing experience and an absolute treat to be a part of such a wonderful shoot for a lovely brand. The location was breathtaking and everyone that helped and took part was great.
Hollie and I really enjoyed spending time together, having a cheeky glass of wine out on the balcony while watching the sea – and hearing the sound of the waves.

Gavin was kind enough to put together this fun little video of our time at South Sands and be sure to check out the new website as our faces are all over it!

You can follow State of Mind on social media too!

Getting Creative with Black Heart Creatives

Good morning my loves!
Last weekend I attended a jewellery workshop in London with the amazing Black Heart Creatives acrylic jewellery company. If you are a long time reader of my blog, you will recognise the name as I have featured them several times, but the most popular moment was when I wore my giant mermaid tail necklace to the British Plus Size Awards – read about it here!
I love my mermaid tail, so when the lovely Charlotte from BHC said she was running a workshop to make one in London at Barsmith I thought it would be a great opportunity to show you all what they do!
The workshops are held at different times and not just in London so be sure to follow BHC to see if they are near you. The venue was a lovely bar in the city with a great big work table at the back. Charlotte had trays all set up with kits and tools ready to go when we arrived.
We were making both an ocean themed bracelet and tail necklace so you end up with a complete set!
With Charlotte’s guidance, we hooked together all the pieces – using our own design and ideas for what pieces we wanted and it wasn’t too hard and of course really good fun!
We enjoyed lovely fruit cocktails as Barsmith do a 2for1 deal and they were super tasty!
When we moved on to the necklaces, we hooked all the pieces together, chose all our rhinestones and appliqués and then were shown how to stick them all down using acrylic glue. I kept my mermaid tail classy yet blingy – which I think it says a lot about me – ha!
Please see this super glamorous photo below of my cat modelling it for you:
The workshop had a fantastic atmosphere and was such a great time. I met some really lovely ladies and saw a few good friends too so it was a really fantastic way to spend a weekend afternoon.
If you love Black Heart Creatives’ jewellery then you should definitely attend one of their workshops the next time they run them – you will not be dissapointed!
For those of you who don’t know BHC, check out my top picks from their new new “Meet the plastics” collection!
If you have attended a workshop please tell me what you thought in the comments and share your pics! I want to see what you made!

OOTD at the Sky Garden

Good morning lovelies and happy Sunday!
Yesterday I spent the morning with Steven and our good friends, Jen and Matt, at the new Sky Garden in London on Fenchurch Street. It’s a pretty spectacular place to walk around, although there isn’t as much ‘garden’ as you would expect.
The views are amazing and you can walk around and see almost all of London in one go. The deck was closed yesterday so I had to take my photos through the windows but I think you can still get the idea. It was amazing and the weather couldn’t have been better.
Since it was so nice yesterday, I decided to go without a coat and take one of my new George at Asda tops out – this one is officially a favourite as it’s so cute and comfortable.
I completely blanked and didn’t take a photo of the back, which has a lovely crochet detail, but click on the link below to see the shirt in full.
What I wore:
Flats – Primark
We spent about an hour wandering around and enjoying the garden and all the views – it was busy but not crowded so it’s a nice way to spend a morning.
If you get a chance to go I would definitely recommend it – it’s free to book.
